Nagasaki University is proud to host a special lecture by the distinguished laureates of the 5th Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize.

The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize was established to honor individuals and organizations with outstanding achievements in medical research or medical services to combat infectious diseases and improve public health in Africa. The prize is awarded at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), held every three years. With TICAD 9 taking place from August 20-22, 2025, in Yokohama, we are honored to welcome the recipients to Nagasaki University for this special event.

Dr. Abdoulaye Djimdé, Director of the Parasite and Microbial Research and Training Center, University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (Mali).

Speakers:

Dr. Djimdé has been a leading researcher in the fight against malaria, a disease that took the lives of his own siblings. He has dedicated his life to creating a “malaria-free Africa” through the clinical development of antimalarial drugs and by training young researchers across sub-Saharan Africa.

Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi)

Dr. Luis Pizarro, Executive Director, Republic of Chile

Dr. Wilfried Mutombo Kalonji, Head of Clinical Operations, DNDi Democratic Republic of Congo office

DNDi is a non-profit research and development organization focused on developing new treatments for neglected diseases. Dr. Pizarro is a global leader in international health with extensive experience managing health projects in Africa. Dr. Mutombo is a medical expert with over a decade of field experience in the research and management of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness.
