The 13th Cohort of the Nagasaki Youth Delegation Pays a Courtesy Visit to President Nagayasu
On Monday, April 14, 2025, the 13th cohort of the Nagasaki Youth Delegation paid a courtesy visit to President Takeshi Nagayasu of Nagasaki University in advance of their participation in the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), to be held in New York.
During the visit, the delegates expressed their aspirations, stating, “We hope to communicate the reality of the atomic bombing and share Nagasaki’s message. We also want to engage in dialogue with people from various countries and backgrounds.” In response, President Nagayasu offered words of encouragement: “As representatives of Nagasaki in this milestone year, marking 80 years since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, I hope you will carry out your mission with a strong sense of responsibility. At the same time, I encourage you to enjoy the experience and make the most of your interactions with people from around the world.”
The visit was attended by six members of the 13th cohort, along with Professor Susumu Shirabe, Chair of the PCU Nagasaki Council for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (PCU-NC); Professor Fumihiko Yoshida, Director of the Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (RECNA); and Professor Kazuko Hikawa, Vice Director of RECNA. Upon their return, the delegates are scheduled to hold a reporting session to share their experiences and insights.
The Nagasaki Youth Delegation is a youth leadership development initiative for the next generation, jointly launched by Nagasaki Prefecture, Nagasaki City, and Nagasaki University, through the Nagasaki Council for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (PCU-NC).
This initiative reflects a shared vision of achieving “Toward a world without nuclear weapons.” The project selects university-age students from within Nagasaki Prefecture and sends them to international conferences, including the NPT Review Conference, to engage in global discussions on nuclear disarmament.
