On April 18, 2025 the First Nagasaki-Taiwan Medical Symposium, organized by the Nagasaki University School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences was held. Ten researchers and administrative staff from the National Taiwan University College of Medicine were invited, and approximately 150 researchers and staff attended.

The symposium aimed to strengthen collaboration in the field of medicine, promote student exchanges in clinical practice programs, and train young researchers to possess international perspectives and experience.

The day before the symposium, a courtesy visit to President Nagayasu took place, along with the signing of an Agreement on Short-term Student Programs between the National Taiwan University College of Medicine and the Nagasaki University School of Medicine was held to promote exchange of medical students for the clinical practice program.

On the day of the symposium, oral presentations by professors and poster presentations by young researchers were given on the theme of medical initiatives that have a significant impact on cross-border health issues. Opening remarks were made by Nagasaki University President Nagayasu Takeshi, Dean Ni Yen-Hsuan and Prof. Huan Jenq-Wen of the National Taiwan University College of Medicine, Dean Kawakami Atsushi of the Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Dean Nishida Koyo of the Nagasaki University Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In the oral session, 11 researchers presented their findings and held lively Q&A sessions, providing an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary knowledge exchange.

In the closing remarks, Prof. Ikematsu Kazuya, Dean of the School of Medicine, also touched upon the long-standing history of exchange between the two institutions’ medical colleges, and expressed hopes for the further strengthening of cooperation between them. There was also a poster session held by 36 young researchers. Participants had the opportunity to witness latest research findings from various fields and interacted with each other in stimulating, cross-discipline dialogue.

The 2026 symposium is scheduled to be held in Taiwan, hosted by the National Taiwan University College of Medicine. Nagasaki University looks forward to deepening collaboration with its partners to ensure the continued success of future symposia.
