Fureai Oshogatsu: An International New Year Cultural Exchange Event
With the generous sponsorship of Huis Ten Bosch Co., Ltd., the and Center for Japanese Language and Student Exchange held an international student exchange event titled “Fureai Oshogatsu (New Year Cultural Exchange)”.
The purpose of this event was to deepen mutual understanding by enabling international and Japanese students to experience traditional Japanese year-end and New Year customs together.
On the day of the event, international and Japanese students participated side by side in hands-on activities such as mochi-pounding, kadomatsu (New Year’s pine decoration) making, and kakizome (New Year calligraphy), fostering meaningful interaction among students.
They also enjoyed traditional children’s games, including stilts (takeuma), kendama, and fukuwarai, and the venue was filled with a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout.
Thanks to the support of the Saiyu Foundation, traditional New Year dishes such as ozoni and toshikoshi soba were provided free of charge to participants.
In addition, a raffle offering Huis Ten Bosch accommodation vouchers and admission tickets further energized the event, making it a lively and memorable cultural exchange.
