Nagasaki University organized a specialized training program on endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), an essential technique for lung cancer diagnosis, at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi, Kenya, from November 25 to 27, 2025.

This training was part of the “Projects for Global Growth of Medical Technologies” commissioned to Nagasaki University by the Japan Institute for Health Security. Five physicians, one nurse, and two clinical engineers from Nagasaki University Hospital participated as instructors, providing intensive training to Kenyan healthcare professionals.

The program began with an opening ceremony attended by Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary, State Department for Medical Services, Ministry of Health; H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura, Ambassador of Japan to Kenya; and Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, CEO of KNH. Professor Keitaro Matsumoto delivered congratulatory remarks on behalf of the President of Nagasaki University.

The three-day course focused on EBUS techniques (EBUS-TBNA and EBUS-GS), endoscopic nursing care, and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Designed as a Training of Trainers (ToT) program, it aims to enable Kenyan professionals to independently conduct future training. Sessions included lectures, model-based demonstrations, hands-on practice, and live cases, concluding with certificate presentations.

Kenya has faced challenges in strengthening its lung cancer diagnostic system; however, through this initiative, KNH is expected to become a national training hub, with potential expansion to the wider East African region in the future. Earlier in September, five KNH trainees completed a three-week intensive program at Nagasaki University Hospital. Nagasaki University remains committed to supporting the development of a sustainable educational framework through the provision of bronchoscopes and simulation models.
