The outcomes of the International Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (International APPE), a joint program between the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nagasaki University and its academic exchange partner, the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy, were published in the peer-reviewed international journal “American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education” on Friday, October 17, 2025.

This paper summarizes the outcomes of the APPE program conducted by students from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nagasaki University, Nagasaki University Hospital, Kamigoto Hospital, and pharmacies within Nagasaki Prefecture.
The APPE program is a mandatory course at the University of New Mexico, typically conducted within the U.S. However, overseas placements are permitted when equivalent clinical training content is assured.

The acceptance of this paper publicly affirms that the clinical placement in Nagasaki fully aligns with the standards of U.S. pharmacy education.
Through this clinical placement, students from the University of New Mexico gain insights into healthcare challenges common to both Nagasaki and New Mexico, including healthcare in remote areas, an aging population, the role of Japanese pharmacists, distinctive Japanese dispensing methods, and the use of Chinese herbal medicine.
Additionally, several events are organized to involve students from our Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, thereby providing valuable opportunities for them to acquire knowledge about different cultures and international pharmacy education.

The APPE program will continue, and we will strive to enhance the quality of pharmaceutical education at both universities through ongoing inter-university collaboration.
