Courtesy Visit to Nagasaki University by CTBTO Executive Secretary Robert Floyd
On August 8, 2025, Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), paid a courtesy visit to Nagasaki University.
Representing Nagasaki University were President Nagayasu Takeshi, RECNA Director Yoshida Fumihiko, Vice Director Hikawa Kazuko, and Professor Morikawa Yuji from the School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences.
In his welcoming remarks, President Nagayasu stated, “It is a great honor to welcome the CTBTO Executive Secretary to Nagasaki in this milestone year marking 80 years since the end of World War II and the atomic bombing.” He introduced the university’s guiding principle of “Creating Science for Global Peace” and its longstanding commitment to education and research aimed at nuclear disarmament.
President Nagayasu also expressed deep respect for the CTBTO’s international efforts to ban nuclear testing and shared his hopes for future collaboration, particularly through the university’s newly established Global Risk Research Center.
Dr. Floyd provided an overview of the CTBTO’s activities and the current international landscape surrounding nuclear disarmament. He emphasized the importance of partnerships with academic and research institutions and expressed strong expectations for Nagasaki University’s contributions to global risk research and cultivating leaders in this field.
The visit also included a discussion session with faculty members from RECNA and students of Nagasaki University.
This visit is expected to further strengthen international cooperation toward the abolition of nuclear weapons and the development of global peace.
