On August 8, 2025, Nagasaki University held a signing ceremony for an academic exchange agreement with the United Nations University (UNU). Since its establishment in 1975, UNU has been the world’s first international university, addressing global challenges such as climate change and the environment, peace and security, and AI and technological innovation through education and research.

The signing ceremony was attended by UNU Rector Tshilidzi Marwala, and Nagasaki University President Nagayasu, who both signed the agreement. Also present were Nagasaki University’s Trustee Nishida (Strategic Development and Research), Trustee Ito (Student Affairs and International Affairs), Vice Director Kasuga (Research Center for Global Risk) and other related staff members. The participants engaged in discussions on future collaboration.

Through this agreement, Nagasaki University aims to deepen its understanding of the United Nations system and use its research achievements to contribute to UNU’s educational and research activities. Planned initiatives include joint research projects and co-hosted events with UNU’s Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS, Bonn) and International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH, Kuala Lumpur), as well as researcher exchanges. Opportunities for student exchange, including participation in UNU’s joint degree programs, are also being explored.

In addition to Nagasaki University’s Research Center for Global Risk, collaboration is expected with the Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition, Interfaculty Initiative in Planetary Health, and the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, and more. This agreement marks a significant foundation for the further development of international education and research activities.

Following the signing ceremony, Rector Marwala delivered a seminar titled “Peace, Health, Technology, and the Power of Future Generations” at the Sakamoto Campus, where ethical use of AI technologies and policy development were discussed. Faculty members of Nagasaki University also presented their research, and graduate students asked many questions which highlighted strong expectations for future collaboration with the United Nations University.
