Special Seminar “Principles and Law in the Face of Trump: The Increased Importance of the Rule of Law and Japan-EU Collaboration” by Prof. Armin Cuyvers of Leiden Law School
On Friday, June 6, Graduate School and School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences of Nagasaki University hosted a special seminar by Professor Armin Cuyvers from Faculty of Law of Leiden University (Netherlands) who expertise in EU law. In a seminar entitled “Principles and Law in the Face of Trump: The Increased Importance of the Rule of Law and Japan-EU Collaboration”, Professor Cuyvers explained that EU law takes precedence over national legislation and that the rule of law forms the institutional core of the EU legal system.
He also addressed the various crises, referred to as “Polycrisis” that have tested the limits of legal authority in relation to political power, emphasizing that mid-sized nations and regions such as the EU, Japan, and ASEAN should enhance cooperation and partnerships based on rule of law and mutual trust to build a new international order that counters the logic of power politics.
Following the lecture, Prof. Cuyvers exchanged views with students, staffs and President Takeshi Nagayasu.
