The 10th Anniversary Ceremony of the Nagasaki University School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH), along with the Honorary Doctorate Conferral and Commemorative Lecture for Dr. Peter Piot, was held at the Commemoration Hall on the Sakamoto Campus on April 15, 2025.

Approximately 200 participants, including TMGH alumni and researchers, attended the ceremony both in person and online. In his opening remarks, Nagasaki University President Takeshi Nagayasu expressed his expectations for TMGH to further contribute as a central pillar in the field of Global Health, one of the three key focus areas of the university’s vision to “realize Planetary Health,” alongside global risk and global ecology.

The ceremony also featured a presentation on TMGH’s progress in advancing Planetary Health. Professor Kiyoshi Kita, Dean of the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, expressed his hope for broad collaboration to support TMGH’s continued effort in research and human resource development over the next decade.

Following the ceremony, the title of “Honorary Doctor of Nagasaki University” was conferred upon Dr. Piot, former Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), in recognition of his longstanding and invaluable support for TMGH since its establishment.

TMGH maintains a partnership agreement with LSHTM and offers the “NU-LSHTM Joint PhD Degree Programme for Global Health.” This program invites distinguished researchers and faculty from abroad. It provides world-class research guidance through a highly advanced curriculum, high-quality teaching materials, and expert instructors, enabling students to earn a joint degree.

Consequently, Nagasaki University has trained numerous skilled professionals who spearhead international research and practice-based initiatives, fostering global health through enhanced collaboration among Japan, developing countries, industrialized nations, and international organizations.

The “NU-LSHTM Joint PhD Degree Programme for Global Health,” which continues to drive Nagasaki University’s leadership and advancement in global health, would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of Dr. Piot.

The conferral of the title “Honorary Doctor of Nagasaki University” recognizes Dr. Piot’s remarkable contributions to creating a continuous system for training and developing professionals who support and advance global health worldwide.

Dr. Piot is the second individual to receive the title of Honorary Doctor from Nagasaki University, following Dr. Osamu Shimomura, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
